Match Report: UBLHC 4th XI vs University of South Wales

8 months ago By Emma Leach

Final Score: Bristol 2 - 0 USW MOTM: Anna Lawson DOTD: Rose Meddings

With the fixture of USW being one of our most important fixtures to avoid relegation, as well as a grudge match after a questionable game earlier in the season, talk was tense in the changing room. As ever, captain Claire shared her words of wisdom with the team and we stepped on to the pitch raring to go. We started off strong, playing our most beautiful hockey to date. 2s on 1s and 3-man configurations were set up everywhere as we worked our way up the field, taking USW by surprise and putting them on the back foot. Our determination to win the ball paid off in the form of an early goal, which was quickly followed by another, pushing us ahead to a 2-0 lead. Morale was high and we played in their half, often getting the ball into the D but not quite converting it. Although USW started to push back and things became a little scrappy at times, we kept it together with some top saves from Ellie and reached half time still 2-0 up.
In the second half, there was change in the air-both sides start to play a much more physical game, with both needing the win and USW keen to take the lead. However, we weren’t about to let that happen. Playing simple balls wide and into space led to some great breaks towards the opposition’s goal, and tight marking by the defence coupled with more solid saves from Ellie meant the 2-0 lead stayed strong. Despite things getting heated, with a USW player sent off and multiple floorings, we kept our cool and finished the game still holding onto the 2-0 win. What a match and what a well-deserved win for the Feisty 4s!
